COMMENCEMENT OF THE CONTINOUS VOTER REGISTRATION EXERCISE BY INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday June 28, 2021 commenced the Continuous Voter Registration CVR nationwide as enshrined in the Electoral Act 2010 as amended Section 9 to 24 in continuation of its practice which it started in 2017 and in fulfilment of its promises to Nigerians. The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) is delighted to note that INEC kept to its promise of commencing with this exercise as proposed and on schedule.

We recall that following the creation of additional polling units in Nigeria, INEC held several stakeholder’s meetings to keep Nigerians abreast of other activities in preparation for the 2023 General Elections and other off-season elections. The flagging off the CVR using its improved technology developed by its ICT department with the objective to make voter registration seamless through the online portal is novel and will enable Nigerians of voting age, those who might have lost their voters card and those wishing to transfer to register at their convenience. Provision has also been made for those who may not have access to internet to register through the INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED), a mobile devise to be operated within local communities at scheduled dates.

Early reports indicate that the portal is up and effective. People can easily log on to it following the instructions and user manuals as deployed by INEC.

CTA, therefore, call on eligible Nigerians especially, the youth who are just turning 18 years of age and those who have not registered to do so as it is their civic right and duty.

We commend INEC for daring another leap towards making elections better in Nigeria through technology. The Centre for Transparency Advocacy calls on Nigerians and all stakeholders to support INEC in this onerous task of making our democracy work.
