07/06/2021

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy welcomes with delight the appointment of Nigeria as the EITI GLOBAL CHAIR ON CONTRACT TRANSPARENCY. CTA could not agree more with the choice of the Executive Secretary of NEITI Dr Orji Ogbonnaya Orji to chair this global initiative towards sustaining transparency in the extractive sector in Nigeria most especially.

Centre for Transparency Advocacy has been a leading voice in the advocacy for contract transparency especially, in the extractive sector in Nigeria. CTA has rallied other CSOs who share the same vision as midwifed by FOSTER to form a consortium of civil society advocates culminating in the formation of a network called the Contract Transparency Network (CONTRANET). CTA is glad to admit the roles played by Dr Michael Uzoigwe of the then FOSTER and now the Country Manager of EITI for Anglophone Countries in establishing CONTRANET. NEITI equally, has been playing a commendable role by providing technical input to CONTRANET especially in the output of the radio programme CONTRACTWATCH.

It is therefore important to acknowledge that NEITI has impacted positively by enshrining contract disclosure in its engagement with entities in Nigeria. We hope that NEITI will consolidate and explore this goodwill by linking up with the global community to sustain open contract and transparent contract processes in the extractive sector in Nigeria.

CTA equally, calls on NEITI to rally all the covered entities to comply with the EITI standards and be in tune with NEITI and its operations anchored on best global practices.

We congratulate both NEITI, Dr Orji and the entire Civil Society consortium advocating for transparent extractive resource governance and management in Nigeria. This is also to show the confidence that the global community has in the ability of Dr Orji and Nigeria to lead towards achieving a global transparent extractive contract process.

CTA is committed to this and pledge to be a partner in this onerous task. We wish Dr Orji well and once again, congratulations.

Faith Nwadishi

Executive Director, CTA
