Narrative Report for Post Capacity building and Video/animation advocacy Initiative

INTRODUCTION
With government disclosing its decade of gas plans including its plans for non-power uses, it has become imperative for the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) and partners to build greater awareness around Nigeria’s gas plans and the importance of right sizing them for non-power uses.
This intervention will empower members of the civil society expert group on gas to develop advocacy campaigns that connect to the Nigerian people through varied communication channels and languages. Through this, we can catalyse robust advocacy and discourse. This, in turn, is expected to effectively influence the calibration of Nigeria’s gas strategies for non-power uses towards more sustainable and appropriate measures.
The methodology involved a collaboration between NRGI and the Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) to support the civil society expert group on gas to develop advocacy campaigns designed to leverage varied communication channels and languages such that our messages reach a varied audience including youth, communities and the elites.
Documentary, vox-pop and street parliament covering public perception on utilisation of gas in the non-power sector compared to alternatives, gender perspectives, impacts and concerns and perspectives on the health and environmental implications of methane emissions in vulnerable communities
Awareness/sensitization videos translated into local languages, English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba on Nigeria’s gas plans within the context of global energy transition and potential risks
Animated explainer videos on fundamentals of right-sizing gas use in the non-power sector, reducing methane emissions reduction from Nigeria’s gas sector etc
Publication on right-sizing non-power uses of gas and infographic/factsheets on methane emissions reduction and right-sizing gas.
         ACTIVITIES

  1. Documentary, vox-pop: This involved a street vox pop specifically targeted at road side women fish traders and roasters at the popular Abacha Road in Nyanya, FCT. The focus was on the effect of charcoal emission on their health, and the implications of contributing to greater emission and environmental challenge. The greater documentary was concerned with expert opinions, interviews, perspectives and public perceptions on the different aspects of the energy transition, the use of alternative sources for domestic and industrial uses as well as the opportunity to use CNG as alternative source for vehicles.
  2. Awareness/sensitization videos translated into local languages: Scripted translations were voiced in the different languages of English, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and Pidgin English in a 4minute voice notes for easy understanding and to be used for advocacy.
  3. Animated explainer videos: The Animation explainers captured in simple terms the gender perspectives, effect of methane emission on the health of women, The Nigeria Gas Plans among others.
  4. Publication on right-sizing non-power uses of gas and infographic/factsheet: Journalists that have been following up on the conversation were commissioned to write Newspaper Feature articles on right-sizing non-power uses of gas as well as other partners to develop factsheets and infographics. Other partners include Dr Louis Ogbeifun of Afrital (Factsheet), Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI) for Infographics, Juliet Ukanwonsu of Extractive 360 and Michael Oche of Nigeria Newspoint for the Features which was equally syndicated through Leadership and Authority Newspapers.
