THE CENTRE FOR TRANSPARENCY ADVOCACY RECIEVES GRANT FROM THE RESOURCE CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND CIVIC EDUCATION (CHRICED) AND MACARTHUR FOUNDATION

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy has received a grant to implement the project: Promoting Cultural Values and Rights of Original Inhabitants (OIs) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through Drama and Art Forms.

The overall thrust and aim of the project are Promoting the RIGHTS OF ORIGINAL INHABITANTS IN the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the Executive Director of CTA, Faith Nwadishi in a press release to announce the grant, “For decades, the OIs of the FCT have faced several forms of infringement of their fundamental rights. This has manifested in the form of institutionalized discrimination, disenfranchisement, and outright marginalization within the Nigerian polity.”. She further stated that CTA will be implementing this project through well thought out activities that will “enable existing Inhabitant efforts to revamp dying cultural values, treasures and repositories.” As well as enhancing the capacity of the Original Inhabitants of the FCT to negotiate good Community Development Agreements (CDAs) with mining companies to address negative environmental impacts and the destruction of cultural sites due to mining activities.

Three major objectives of the project are;

1: Improved awareness and voice of FCT Original Inhabitants about their rights, responsibilities, and options through a Community Theatre Group that this project will establish.

2: Improved level of responsiveness of government institutions and actors to address the injustices arising from extractive mining through advocacy for mining contract transparency.

3. Improved basic service delivery and accountability for the benefit of Original Inhabitant peoples of the FCT through a Community Information Centre that will be established.

It is expected at the end of the two years duration of the project that; there will be overall improvement of access to environmental services delivery by mining companies and government agencies as well as the socio-cultural rights of the OIs of FCT. She concluded by informing that CTA is excited about this project and the support from CHRICED and MacArthur Foundation to deliver on this project.
